This year's Specialty Beer Category...
This year's special category (#29) is the Funkiest of Show. The winner of the category will be brewed at San Antonio's newest brewpub, the Freetail Brewing Company, and will be entered into the GABF Pro-Am. NOTE: To satisfy the Pro-Am rules, you must be an AHA member at the time of the ACCF and when the Pro-Am is held."
Are you tired of being constrained by style guidelines? Do you think "traditional styles" have been done to death and best left to dead Germans? Do you want to cut the shackles of stlye and brew some good ass beer? Then the ACCF's Funkiest of Show category is for you. This is your chance to win a ribbon without compromising your spirit of beer adventure in order to "hit the preset mark."
Growing upon last year's success, the Funkiest of Show will be expanded to its very own category at the 2009 ACCF, with the winner being honored by having their recipie brewed by the free spirits at San Antonio's newest brewpub Freetail Brewing Co. Funkiest of Show, as described by Freetail's head brewer and Funk Missionary, Jason Davis, "can be found in certain styles, (but) we are looking to expand brewers' concept of what Funk is. It may be a maple porter w/ smoked poblanos, an incredibly hoppy doppelbock, a lemongrass-infused lager, or a hamhock in your cornflakes. Bottom line, the Funkiest of Show will strike the best balance across the funkiest of extremes." Funkiest of show gives brewers "a chance to brew your way--out of your constriction" says Davis, paraphrasing an old Funkadelic riff. "Oftentimes in competition, really good beers are entered in the wrong category. It may not fit the guidelines precisely and won't advance. Funkiest of Show cuts through the formality of competition and gets to the soul of beer."
Do you have what it takes to say good by to guidelines and "Come and Take It"?
